So far just today I've removed and banned six spam accounts and it's only 7PM in my neck of the woods. One wonders if the people who post this rubbish get anything out of it. I suppose they must since they spread themselves around pretty widely.

Anyway, comment about it here if you like and definitely report it. I usually login at least once a day so I will catch them, like the one who was online as I just logged in... but in case I can't login for any reason, ie computer or internet problems or something like that and Alex doesn't have time, please report them and NEVER click the links. I know most people know not to, but sometimes curiosity can be a curse. :cheese:

Thanks. :)

Well i guess they do make them because they hope that while they are up here some people might check them out. Maybe they have personalized links to the websites they want us to go to, and maybe they get a small amount of money for every visit to that site through their link.

I do not like people who do things like that so i report them every time i find one or several.

So I see there's more and more spam every day and no way to stop it since all options are active to prevent actual bots.

I know there's a heap there at the moment, but it will have to wait until later in the day as it's just turned 6am (playing Skyrim) and I have to be out most of the day today. I imagine there will be even more by then, but I'll get to it as soon as I get back.

In case this is still a problem, you might be interested in a site called Stop Forum Spam
http://stopforumspam.com/
which is a database storig usernames, IPs and email adresses of known spam bots. There is also a plugin (in the download section) for phpBB that checks SFS. We have a similar software running on a VBulletin board and it has a detection rate of 99+ % while we are having more than a hundred registration attempts every day. It's free, so maybe worth giving it a shot.

Thanks for the info Gramblosh. :) I'll check it out a bit later.

It sometimes seems like it's a lot of spam here because it's a small forum, but it's usually 2-4 a day and doesn't take long to get rid of. It just seems so futile that people have to resort to this crap. Obviously it pays well.

Spambots as well as real people who register to post the spam topic with ads and porn links etc.

I remove at least four or five spam threads a day, sometimes up to ten with multiple posts over the entire forum.

The forum is set up so new members have to pass a CAPTCHA, but when it's humans doing the posting there's not much that can be done except IP ban them. It only takes a little while to remove them and their posts as it's a small forum and some days it (they) pisses me off because I wonder what the point of it all is (rhetorical,) but in general it's not a big drama.

My internet was off all day yesterday due to technical problems at the provider so I couldn't get here and clear out the spam.

If it happens again or for longer periods and spam posts build up I suggest still reporting it as usual or leave it to be dealt with and also getting in touch with Shingouki as he is also Admin and can deal with it. That also goes for any other problem that may crop and anyone has concerns of any kind.

One of these days I will look into a forum mod package as suggested by someone else (sorry whoever that was...forget where I saw it posted) but at the moment I login at least once a day and it's not a problem for me to clear it. Some new "members" are also being preemptively removed before they can post as I can see where they originate from and other details that point to spam registrations. Don't worry, I won't remove anyone unless I'm sure...lol.
